WHEN walking into the Gregory Dean hair salon in Leigh-on-Sea, there’s no denying that this is going to be a high-end experience. But don’t go feeling like you need airbrushing before you even go in the doors. “Oh, no one should feel like that” said Dean, one of the two directors. “Of course we want to deliver the highest quality service that we possibly can, but that doesn’t mean people should feel intimidated to come in. Ben and I are just two local boys. We really are like a family and we do think of our clients as our friends.”
So now you’re comfortable, let’s get back to getting excited about putting yourself in the hands of this sumptuous salon. The art deco inspired interior design alone screams style, luxury and quality. At the stages of planning it, taking their influence from the era of Biba and the glamour of the Savoy Hotel, directors Ben and Dean put months into researching even the smallest detail with the comfort and pleasure of their clients always in mind. The sleek furniture is a cool mixture of modern and vintage. Upon pre-design market research and hearing clients’ main gripe about salons was their discomfort at the basin, the boys purchased the famous Gregory Dean hydro massaging chairs, which lift your legs as you lay back to take the pressure off your neck at the basin as well as gently stroke away any stress. They were the biggest indulgence of all the salon fittings and fixtures. Indeed ‘client comfort’, ‘quality’ and ‘style’ are the words which epitomise Gregory Dean’s ethos.
Ben and Dean have been part of the hair teams on shows, shoots and high gloss magazines all over the world, rubbing shoulders with many fashion, film and music luminaries, working alongside the likes of Kate Moss, Donatella Versace, the late great David Bowie, Justin Bieber, Vera Wang… one could go on and on. They have encouraged certain members of their team who want to stretch into that field, to follow suit and go on to work with some of the biggest industry names during Fashion Week events. This means they are constantly bringing back and passing on brand new skills and trends to the salon based stylists, seasons ahead. In addition to this, every one of the team is continuously sent on courses to be trained and refreshed in the very latest techniques and qualifications. But despite the unquestionably extravagant experience you will treat yourself to at Gregory Dean, (incidentally, the salon recently won a much coveted Secret Shopper award for an Essex style magazine), the buzzing establishment is indeed as much down-to-earth as it is polished. The team’s pride in its workplace is clear to see as each member expertly tweaks the fine points to make sure everything is ready for the first appointment. From plucking at the sumptuous flower arrangement to percolating the fresh coffee, getting their stations ready with much laughter, fussing over the salon dog Luigi and chatting about home life, their kids and genuine love and care for their customers, you can see why Gregory Dean’s returning client base is way above the national average.
